What do S’mores, friends, casseroles, and singing have in common? Answer: all these were part of the activities on September 23rd during Linder Road’s 21st Annual Friends’ Day. Members invited friends and family to join in a day of worship and fellowship, including a potluck lunch provided by the members, and an evening fireside devotional service followed by S’mores and social time to connect to one another in the open air.
The annual event is one way the Linder Road church reaches out to those we know and invites them to come and see more about Jesus and his way. (Revelation 22:17 “The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come”. Let anyone who hears this say, “Come”. Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life.”)
The lesson provided during worship was all about “Belonging to Community” being a basic universal need of mankind. When Jesus established his church, he intended his body (1 Corinthians 12:20,27) to fulfill this need. We were encouraged to use the gifts God gives each of us (Romans 12:4 – 8) to love, support, build up and show kindness towards one another. Our guests were invited to consider our church community as a place where they could belong.
The potluck provided a great way for our friends to spend time with the Linder family by sharing in a variety of foods, including casseroles (of course), and some very delicious sweet treats! The fellowship hall was filled with the fragrant aromas, and much talking and laughter.
In the evening, the fireside singing and devotional was a lovely way to end our day of worship. The message taught us that God is not so much concerned about our outward appearance, but rather he desires us to develop our inner Christ-like appearance. We were encouraged from Philippians 4:4-8,13 to gain strength in Christ, put aside our anxiety by trusting more in his power rather than in ourselves, and to think on the worthy, honorable and pure things of good report.
And the finishing touch on a very delightful Friends Day were the S’mores (and coffee for those who like their beans in a beverage rather than on a cracker!) around the fireside. Kids (of any age) melting marshmallows over a fire to smash onto chocolate and graham crackers always seems to bring a smile and sense of belonging to the heart.
