As 2019 begins, we often look back at what have been our experiences over the last year, some for good and some “not so much”. We also look forward in anticipation of what might be our future in the coming year.
As you contemplate the future, it is encouraging to see that Jesus has already given us some great insights on thriving in this New Year. Revelation 21:5 says “And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’” Notice what Jesus said in the bold print of this quote, He is the one who has power to make all things new. What a rich and precious promise for those who determine to follow Jesus – our year, our month, our day, and every moment can be saturated with this awesome blessing with its liberating effect on us!
Jesus also has much to say about freedom when we are in a right relationship with him. Freedom to choose! We are liberated to choose to live pure lives, to serve, to love, to do acts of kindness without fearing failure because Jesus can make all things new.
In Ephesians 5:15-17, Paul gives us some practical advice on this idea of choice. He says “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” And the will of the Lord is revealed to us in Jesus’ teachings. We can absolutely know what pleases God by looking at Jesus and following his example. In the simplest of words, Jesus told the religious leaders and the people that the greatest commandment is to love God with your whole being, and the next is to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-40).
Our desire for 2019 is to be living out these instructions as we choose to follow God’s will for our lives. He is able to make all things new! Happy New Year!
