Linder Road church of Christ hosted our annual ladies retreat at the beautiful Shore Lodge Resort in McCall, Idaho on September 7th and 8th.
Our guest speaker was Tami Roberts from Oklahoma. Her “Singing in the Rain” lesson series was very inspiring and the ladies had a great time getting to know each other.
During the 2 day retreat, over 50 ladies spent time in studying God’s word, singing songs of worship, dining together, and soaking in the natural beauty of the lake and mountains.
Drawing from her own life experiences and the scriptures,Tami shared practical ways on how to deal with the various storms that may come into our lives. Her lessons were grounded in the godly wisdom we can find in the scriptures, including warnings, advice and comfort during these trials. She charged the ladies to be holy in all we think, say and do by quoting 1 Peter 1:14 – 16 “As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
Lesson one covered choices we make in our lives which bring on storms that we must live through. Bad choices, like Sarai, Abram and Hagar made in Genesis, chapters 16 & 21, or sinful choices, like David and Bathsheba made in 2 Samuel, chapter 11 can destroy relationships, cause unnecessary heartache, and even result in pain and death. [Proverbs 6:32 “But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself.” ]
We were encouraged to avoid such temptations and to develop the character of God’s servant as 1 Peter 3:8-9 instructs us to live in harmony with one another, being sympathetic, compassionate and humble.
In lesson two, Tami shared advice about the storms of life that come out of nowhere; flash floods such as cancer, job loss, death of a loved one, unfaithful children, etc. These storms can happen to anyone, and we were encouraged by the faithful examples of Joseph and Job who weathered their storms with God’s help. Tami encouraged us to help each other by sharing with one another our experiences, struggles, and heartaches with gentleness and compassion.
Lesson three was Tami’s victory lesson. She encouraged us with stories of her own struggles, with reminders from the scriptures of God’s faithfulness (2 Corinthians 1:3-4), and she left us with a challenge to reach out to one another as we keep our eyes looking upward to our goal!
Truly, in Christ we are able to sing in the rain, for we know the Son is always shining. Ps 30:4-5 Sing to the LORD, you saints of his…..weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.
