Treasure Valley Men’s Rally III

What does “pie” mean to you?

Yummy food? Pure bliss baked in a circle? At Linder Road, “pie” often means our Men’s Retreat, a yearly gathering of the men in our congregation to talk about issues of faith. And spend about an hour talking over pie.

This year, we spent two half days gathered in our church building and talking about how to be more challenged in our church and our faith. About 60 men took part.

Our speaker was Steve Higginbotham, the minister at the Karns church of Christ in Knoxville, Tennessee. He talked about how to share our faith with others, with our friends and with our family.

“We’ve got make the word of God part of our lives,” said Mr. Higginbotham. “Don’t miss the opportunity to talk about the Word of God in our every day interactions. When we get up. When we go to bed.”

Mr. Higginbotham remembered that as a child, he would go to bed and then shout down the hall to his father to ask about a particular Bible verse. It was obvious to the elder Higginbotham that his son was trying to stay up longer, but it allowed him to plant the Word of God into his son.

Mr. Steve Higginbotham commented at the retreat on how that memory showed him how his father lived his Christianity. It later helped influence him to becoming a minister.

“You’ve got to instill the Word of God in your children,” said Steve. “There should be an aroma of God in your house.”

If you don’t, he said that it is unreasonable to think that your children will grow up and become Christians.

“Christianity is not just something I talk about. It’s something I do,” he said. “Let our children see us live the values that we talk about. Don’t let them see us do one thing and say another. Then, we’re just hypocrites.”

And as men from Linder Road, we should always share some time together over pie. To do otherwise would be hypocritical. (We really like pie.)
