JANUARY – SCRIPTURE
Weekly Practices:
Each week read, reread, and practice relating with God through Scripture. Get your journal or open a note on your phone, and take some time to reflect on these Psalms each week throughout this month:
- Sunday: Psalm 1
- Monday: Psalm 2
- Tuesday: Psalm 19
- Wednesday: Psalm 72
- Thursday: Psalm 89
- Friday: Psalm 90
- Saturday: Psalm 148
Week 1 (Jan 5-11)
Introspection: Each day read, reflect, and journal about that day’s Psalm answering the following question about God.
- What did you learn about God from this Psalm?
- Read and listen to the Psalm multiple times.
- For an added challenge read the Psalm in multiple translations.
Week 2 (Jan 12-18)
Interpretation: Each day answer the following questions about that day’s Psalm.
- What is the main point the writer is trying to communicate?
- What biblical themes are in this Scripture?
- How does this Scripture point to Jesus?
- How do I apply this Scripture to my life?
Week 3 (Jan 19-25)
Memorization: Pick one of the Psalms to memorize.
- Read it out loud.
- Meditate on it.*
- Write it down.
- Practice with others.
*In Psalm 1:2, the Hebrew word translated “meditate” means to quietly recite the words of Scripture aloud or in your mind as a way to focus your attention so that these words become a part of you.
Week 4 (Jan 26-Feb 1)
Self-reflection: Each day, read that day’s Psalm and reflect on how this month has strengthened your relationship with God.
- How has my spiritual life benefited from this month’s practices?
- How have these practices helped with obstacles in my spiritual life?
- How have these practices brought me closer to God?
- What was difficult about this month’s practices?
Going Deeper: If you would like to dig deeper into relating to God through Scripture, use these same practices as you read Psalm 119, other Psalms, or any of your favorite passages.
