MAY – MEDITATION

What is Biblical meditation? In contrast to Eastern meditation, Biblical meditation is not simply emptying your mind, but filling it with something other than just your own thoughts. Biblical meditation is filling your mind with the Word of God. The Hebrew word for meditate is used in the Bible for when animals make a low growling or moaning noise (Isaiah 59:11). So when the Psalmist uses the word meditate in Psalm 1, the idea is to quietly read the Bible out loud to yourself.

Weekly Practices:

Every day each week meditate on the following Scriptures. This is best practiced in solitude, but could be done in a group.

  1. Silence: Begin by sitting in silence with God, emptying your mind to prepare to hear from God’s Word.
  2. Meditate: Read and re-read the passage of Scripture quietly out loud.
  3. Contemplate: Think about what this passage says about God, his plan, and your life.
  4. Prayer: Conclude with a prayer guided by what you just read.
  5. Dwell: Allow the passage to dwell in you by reflecting on its words throughout the day, being open to applying it to your life.
