On the third Sunday of June, it is an American tradition to honor our fathers by setting aside the day to offer special thanks for everything they are, do, and give for us.
The nation’s first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. Within a few years, it became a national tradition to celebrate Father’s Day. However, it was not until 1972 that the day honoring fathers became a nationwide holiday in the United States.
We are so thankful for our fathers, who sacrifice daily to provide physical, emotional, and spiritual guidance and support to their families. Even more, we are all blessed when fathers look for guidance to the greatest example of fatherhood which is found in God himself, who has described his relationship to us as “our Heavenly Fatherâ€.
Jesus, his uniquely begotten son, reveals the Father to us in ways that we had not known before his arrival on earth, and through Jesus we can have the father/child relationship with God that he always intended, and that we each long for in the depths of our souls.
“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.†â€â€Galatians‬ â€4:4-7‬
By Jesus’ sacrifice and through our obedient faith, we become children of God and are adopted into God’s family. Jesus calls us his brothers, God is now “Abba, Father†to us, and we are heirs in the kingdom of heaven.
“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”â€
â€â€Romans‬ â€8:15‬ â€
We honor all of our earthly fathers for the love, care and devotion they give day by day to their families. Also, we sincerely desire that you come to know our “Heavenly Father†and seriously consider the offer of adoption into his family, then one day we can all be together in the heavenly home prepared for us.
“Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. â€â€John‬ â€20:17‬ â€
