“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” (‭‭Psalms‬ ‭90:12‬) The New Year of 2020 is just a few days away and as 2019 draws to a close, our natural inclination is to review the memories and moments of influence we have created as our legacy over the past year.  Sometimes, the review process includes setting goals to achieve various successes in the coming year, and sometimes it may bring a degree of sorrow or regret to our hearts over the losses and mistakes behind us. For many, this self evaluation and goal setting includes the desire to develop greater wisdom in order that we may live our lives more purposefully.  Of course, in this “Information Age” there is no lack of options…

“At that time, Augustus Caesar sent an order that all people in the countries under Roman rule must list their names in a register. This was the first registration; it was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to their own towns to be registered. So Joseph left Nazareth, a town in Galilee, and went to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, known as the town of David. Joseph went there because he was from the family of David. Joseph registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was now pregnant. While they were in Bethlehem, the time came for Mary to have the baby, and she gave birth to her first son. Because there were no rooms left in the inn, she wrapped the…

Butterflies and Buzzards Ladies Retreat 2019

Butterflies and Buzzards Ladies Retreat 2019

Church
The story is told of a lady who radiated joy and grace even while going through great suffering and trials.  When asked how she kept such a positive attitude, she related this parable. There is a meadow where 2 creatures are flying over head.  One is a buzzard looking for dead, disgusting things to eat, and the other is a butterfly looking for beautiful flowers and sweet nectar to eat.  Each finds what it is looking for in the very same meadow. So began our Ladies Retreat for 2019 titled “Butterflies and Buzzards”, featuring lessons by Heather Hahn, who came to us from Lake Houston Church of Christ, Texas.   During these two days of retreat, Heather shared lessons on being a butterfly in hard times, with our children, in our…

All who Labor

All who Labor

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭11:28‬) Labor Day 2019 is on Monday, September 2nd.  This holiday pays tribute to the contributions of American workers, is traditionally observed on the first Monday in September, and became a federal holiday in 1894. The holiday originated during the Industrial Revolution when labor practices were dismal, working environments were unsafe, and child labor abuses were common. Today’s work environment is very different, yet in a very real sense, we all labor under a load that is dismal.  Jesus came to seek and save those who struggle under many kinds of burdens: sin, worry, doubt, fear, loneliness and confusion.  He offers us a different kind of life experience when we follow him. “Take…
