The nation was losing a great leader. He had served them well. He had led them well. He had faithfully followed in the footsteps as his predecessor as the nation conquered all who stood before them. Now, approaching 110 years old, he was nearing his death. However, as the great leader he was, he addressed the people one final time. He knew he had to be firm, for their history was one of indecisiveness when it came to staying focused on their God. So, he told them plainly, “Put away the gods that have plagued you since the days of captivity. Serve Jehovah! Choose! Decide today and every day whom you serve and commit to that decision. I have to admit, there’s a whole lot about the Winter Olympics I just don’t understand. And I’m a sports guy! But, there are competitions and terms and activities underway in Pyeongchang I just can’t explain. (I heard one luge competitor described as “highly skilled.” Don’t you just lie on the sled?!) Take the curling competition, for instance. If you’re not familiar – like most of humanity – it’s the game which looks like giant shuffleboard on ice. It’s a game I’ve watched, tried to understand, and basically resorted to just making fun of. However, I watched the US mixed doubles team lose last night to the defending world champion Swiss team. As unbelievable as it is, we’ve turned a page on 2018 already! One month in – seems like a good time to stop and take an assessment of things. How are those New Year’s resolutions going? Are you still exercising at 5:00 a.m. everyday like you said you would? Have you reduced to one cup of coffee a day like you vowed on January 1st? Just a couple nights ago, President Trump addressed the nation. As a country, we stop annually and take a look at the state of our union (#SOTU). What did we accomplish this past year? Wednesday evening, 1/10/18, President Trump surprised his Congressional audience when he said, somewhat cryptically, regarding America’s opioid crisis, “I think I know the answer…not sure the country is ready for it yet. Does anybody know what I mean? I think so.” He did not elaborate. Maybe he has some far-reaching border control method in mind to stop the flow of illegal drugs into our nation. Maybe he knows something we don’t know about the current efforts. Maybe he’s just blowing smoke… However, wouldn’t it be great if someone DID have The Answer?! It would be awesome if some politician or leader had the answer for eliminating illegal drugs, eradicating poverty, and stamping out racism. That would change everything, wouldn’t it? I have it.
