Can I Just Pray?

Can I Just Pray?

Church
I'll admit right up front - I’m not a big country music fan. I know next-to-no contemporary country music. However, something happened last night which may pique my interest a little bit. The CMT Artists of the Year awards show was held in Nashville. Kane Brown, an artist receiving an award, used his acceptance speech to honor his drummer, Kenny Dixon, who very recently died in a car crash. Brown’s speech was touching and moved many in the audience to tears. Moments later another honoree, Thomas Rhett, moved by Brown’s appearance, asked the whole audience to stop and pray with him. “I don't know if this is very conventional, but can I just pray? Really fast. Is that OK with everybody?” Then he proceeded to lead the audience in a…

Butterflies and Buzzards Ladies Retreat 2019

Butterflies and Buzzards Ladies Retreat 2019

Church
The story is told of a lady who radiated joy and grace even while going through great suffering and trials.  When asked how she kept such a positive attitude, she related this parable. There is a meadow where 2 creatures are flying over head.  One is a buzzard looking for dead, disgusting things to eat, and the other is a butterfly looking for beautiful flowers and sweet nectar to eat.  Each finds what it is looking for in the very same meadow. So began our Ladies Retreat for 2019 titled “Butterflies and Buzzards”, featuring lessons by Heather Hahn, who came to us from Lake Houston Church of Christ, Texas.   During these two days of retreat, Heather shared lessons on being a butterfly in hard times, with our children, in our…

Give Thanks to Our God

Give Thanks to Our God

Blog, Church
Oh, give thanks to the LORD! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples! Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.” (1 Chronicles 16:8,34) Just as the first pilgrims gathered to give thanks to God for the blessings of the harvest so long ago, this Thursday most Americans will gather around tables loaded with roasted meats, fall vegetables, crusty rolls, and sweets beyond measure.  Truly, the bounty of this rich nation has enabled it's citizens to flourish! In fact, flourishing is an extreme understatement when the wealth of physical blessings we Americans enjoy are compared with most other people in the world.   Yet in the Biblical view, flourishing is much broader than just the physical, rather our heavenly…

Let’s Talk “Church Growth”

Let’s Talk “Church Growth”

Church
God is good, isn’t He?! We have been so blessed! I cannot emphasize enough how great it is we’re dealing with challenges…because we’re growing. Due to our circumstances, I have been reading a lot lately on the ever-changing subject of “church growth.” It’s really an interesting term. I had a class at Bear Valley called “Church Growth.” There’s a genre of books and literature with the same designation. There are great thinkers, many among the Lord’s church, who are considered “experts” in this field. But, let’s think about this for a minute, shall we? To a person we would certainly remind our friends and families the church is not the building, it’s the people. We would not hesitate to confirm the church is comprised of individual, obedient believers sharing in…
